Between the way this song sounds, the references to being stuck underground, and the repeated question of where the singer’s been, I just felt the dread of subtle horror and the idea of being gone for a literal lifetime reading a dark and dangerous book and yet finding yourself the same age in front of a party came quick after that.
And I love that idea.
I don’t love the execution of it here. I like it. I don’t love it.
If and when I revisit it, I’d pull back further. Drop all the dialogue and just have the story unfold completely from Vivian’s confused and altered perspective. That extra bit of distance would, I believe, better convey the overall emotion of the piece and reflect the protagonist’s personal sense of disconnect from what is unfolding in front of her.
