Thing are winding down, the familiar end seeming inevitable

The night spent tossing barbs back and forth

Flirting masked as acrimony

Or perhaps the other way around

We know the dance, the steps are memorized

Walking away separately

Meeting up again

A tumble out of clothes and into bed

Or perhaps onto the counter or against the shower door

But the result is always the same

Us in the dying embers of the dark

Then you, me, separate as can be, as the sun peaks

So tired of it, So ready to be done

That’s a lie of course

For all that the performative maneuvers are style

The time after is glorious

The most in sync, the perfect rhythm

What are friends with benefits

When only the benefits remain?

Just a one-night stand stretched on for years?

The bliss is total, the aftermath is deflating

With the nudity seems to come clarity

Of purpose of need of ability

The moments spent holding after a joy as well

But then the light, the alarm

We used to like each other once, our laughs free and easy

But now, there’s only the bed, the wall, the floor, and that toolshed that one time

Using sex in search of the people we were

When we stop for months, I do miss you

The thing is, it’s not just you

We both stopped being who we are somewhere along the way

And I only find the myself I want to be, again, inside you
